Jacob Ehrat was the oldest child of Hans Georg Ehrat and Katherina (Schlatter) Ehrat.
Jacob was confirmed at St. Martin's (Protestant) Church in Lohn on 14 April 1867. After coming to America he took his final oath of citizenship on 20 Sept. 1876. Married Louisa Buehrer on 08 Nov. 1883. She was the daughter of Johann and Anna Maria (Metzger) Buehrer from nearby Altorf, Switzerland. They lived in Section # 31 of Wilberton Township and later on Jefferson Street in Vandalia. Buried at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia.
